Like a number of other Western European languages, English Traditionally authorized questions to be formed by inverting the positions on the verb and subject matter. Modern English permits this only in the case of a small class of verbs ("Specific verbs"), consisting of auxiliaries together with sorts of the copula be (see subject matter–auxiliar
